Purchasing a Pressurized Koi Pond Filter

Pressurized Koi pond filters are pretty much state of the art. As they let you pump pond water uphill, you have much more flexibility and creativity in the design of your Koi pond. As always, do your homework before purchasing a pressurized Koi filter.

Pond water needs to be filtered throughout every 1 or 2 hours. Beforehand, work out the size of your pond and the correct Koi filter accordingly. Each filter will have a stated GPH rating, i.e. gallons per hour rating.

Be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars on a good pressurized Koi filter. So, really think about what featured you really need of the filter. Do research first to get a feel for how much you’ll need to spend.

Think about what biological media you want. Some are definitely better than others. While bead Koi filters are well-liked, foam filters purchased already implanted with good bacteria are acceptable alternatives. Remember that good bacteria are your friends in a Koi pond – they’ll help keep the pond clean.

The required maintenance routine may differ for each Koi filter model. Some filters are harder to keep clean than other. For example, some filters need you to manually remove, clean and replace the filter material on a specific time period. While other pond filters are much more hands off. Save yourself some potential grief and research the recommended maintenance beforehand.

One more tip: after you have first install the pressurized Koi filter, keep a close eye on the ammonia and nitrate levels in your Koi pond. Depending on the particulars of your pond (e.g. number of fish, pond temperature) a pressurized filter does need between 2 to 4 weeks to properly establish itself.
